The original four-day event was created as a goodwill gesture to the 15,000 reporters coming to cover that year's Democratic National Convention. Restaurants, which are natural competitors, came together and each charged $19.92 for a three-course prix fixe meal. It has inspired Restaurant Week’s all over the world ever since.

Fun Fact: The Pricing traditionally coincides with the year; many items include 13 cents, e.g. Pizza Ortica’s $20.13 lunch special and $30.13 Dinner.
